Techstars Startup Weekend Nairobi – 6th Edition

Techstars Startup Weekend is back in Nairobi, scheduled from the 7th to the 9th of July 2023 at Moringa School, Ngong Road, Nairobi. This event aims to build an enabling environment where passionate, innovative, and like-minded individuals can converge to conceive solutions to pressing social and economic issues in their community.

Startup Weekend, a flagship program by Techstars, a globally acclaimed seed accelerator, has so far nurtured over 2,900 companies with a combined market capitalization exceeding 159B USD. The program guides participants in their transformative journey from being innovators to entrepreneurs in an exhilarating 54-hour span.

We invite participants from diverse backgrounds, including designers, students, business specialists, developers, engineers, and doctors. The event is not confined to tech enthusiasts but is also designed for anyone with an innovative mindset who is keen to learn and collaborate. Over the course of the weekend, participants will form teams, pitch ideas, and refine their concepts into viable prototypes with the guidance of seasoned mentors and coaches. The highlight of the Techstars Startup Weekend will be a five-minute presentation of each team’s idea to a panel of judges, who will then select a winner.

“Startup Weekend is a truly global platform that gives Kenyans the opportunity to create a business from the ground up, while benefiting from invaluable mentorship and feedback,” commented Innocent Magothe, one of the organizers. For this edition, our lead partner and host is Moringa School, a pioneering educational institution offering comprehensive tech-related programs.

This upcoming event marks the fifth edition of the Techstars Startup Weekend in Nairobi. The previous edition was held on February 26th, 2023, at Africa’s Talking, Lavington, with Africa’s Talking as the main partner. Before that, another successful edition was held from April 1-3, 2023 at Adaninan Labs. Both events witnessed an impressive turnout of innovators and collaborators. Past editions have drawn mentors, judges, and sponsors from various organizations such as Open Capital, Standard Chartered, Adanian Labs, Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Briter Bridges, Pong Agencies, UNEP, Safaricom, Light for the World, and Kyanda, among others. We look forward to the continued participation of such esteemed entities in the upcoming event.

Our past events were a testament to the innovative spirit of the participants. One such idea focused on transforming public buildings into welcoming spaces for people with disabilities, with a particular emphasis on redesigning washrooms to promote dignity, respect, and accessibility. Another promising initiative presented an affordable and convenient solution for short-distance travel through bicycle, scooter, or electric bike rentals from docking stations, contributing to a greener world. A third innovation encouraged recycling through an incentive system, thereby creating an impactful approach towards responsible waste management.
